Join us this Friday, September 6th during the First Friday Art Walk as we prepare for Hispanic Heritage Month! GMoA’s newest outreach instructor, Gabriella Galvan will teach visitors how to make nicho boxes. Take inspiration from the artworks in our current exhibition “The Home I Never Knew: Ni de Aquí, Ni de Allá” including the installation piece by Sandra Perez-Ramos, “Se Juntaron Los Dioses.”
What is a nicho box? A nicho box, or simply nicho, is a three-dimensional display box, like a shadow box. Traditionally, they combined elements from Roman Catholicism, mestizo spirituality, and popular culture. Today, nichos can be created as shrines to important people or loved ones or used for protection or devotion. Join us in creating a nicho box as a precursor to our closing reception for “The Home I Never Knew: Ni de Aquí, Ni de Allá” which will occur on Friday, November 1st along with a special Dia de Muertos hosted in partnership with Casa Azul de Wilson at the Greenville Museum of Art!
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
First Friday drop-in programming is free to the public.
