“Living in the Southern part of [the United States]... I felt I have had to almost mask or hide, ebb and flow between my identities of being Guatemalan and also wanting to be accepted in the spaces I was existing and living in growing up. “

ARTIST STATEMENT
I deconstruct photographs, collaging them together to build photographic objects and wallpaper. Strips of inkjet paper weave in and out, obscuring my portraits with armor. The textures in my work originate from childhood blankets, honoring the spirits of my Guatemalan matriarchs. The woven masks in my work symbolize the constriction I experienced navigating masculinity as a queer Latino child. The threads of these portraits extend beyond the canvas, challenging the borders of the self. I treat this disruption as an invitation for the audience to explore the depths of their own identities.
