ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is a representation of certain cultural/ social issues and hardships that I and others have faced. I use acrylic paint on canvas, first I sketch the outline on the canvas with colored pencil then go over the sketch with watered down acrylic, and work in sections to finish the piece. I started off this series, “Prenda Del Alma” with the piece titled “Celeste.” This first piece was an omen to the innocence and childhood gone too soon, it features me as a little girl surrounded by the Libra constellation and my favorite toys. The second piece titled “Leonardo” features my brother when he was a little boy surrounded by his favorite toys and the red vein of destiny. The last piece titled “My Boys” features my brother, Leonardo, my boyfriend, Pedro, and myself in a warm embrace, surrounded by the Virgo constellation and my veins. They both died in a car accident May 21, 2023, and not only did I lose the two most important people to me, I lost the versions of myself only they knew. These pieces, while very colorful, hold a deeper meaning of the pain of grief and loss.
DECLARACIÓN DEL ARTISTA
Mi trabajo es una representación de ciertos problemas y dificultades culturales/sociales que yo y otros hemos enfrentado. Utilizo pintura acrílica sobre lienzo, primero bosquejo el contorno en el lienzo con lápiz de color, luego repaso el boceto con acrílico diluido y trabajo en secciones para terminar la pieza. Comencé esta serie “Prenda Del Alma” con la pieza titulada “Celeste”. Esta primera pieza fue un presagio de la inocencia y la infancia que se fueron demasiado pronto; me presenta como una niña pequeña rodeada por la constelación de Libra y mis juguetes favoritos. La segunda pieza titulada “Leonardo” presenta a mi hermano cuando era pequeño rodeado de sus juguetes favoritos y la vena roja del destino. La última pieza titulada “My Boys” nos presenta a mi hermano Leonardo, mi novio Pedro y a mí en un cálido abrazo, rodeados por la constelación de Virgo y mis venas. Ambos murieron en un accidente automovilístico el 21 de mayo de 2023, no solo perdí a las dos personas más importantes para mí, sino que perdí las versiones de mí misma que solo ellos conocían. Estas piezas, si bien son muy coloridas, contienen un significado más profundo del dolor del duelo y la pérdida.
