ARTIST STATEMENT

For this painting, I chose to depict an impressionist view of downtown Miami, Florida -a city commonly made home for many Cuban immigrants. A good portion of my Cuban relatives live in Miami, so while I am not able to visit much it still holds a special place in my heart. On billboards in the upper right-hand corner of the painting, you will see one that reads “90 Miles to Cuba.” The inspiration for this came from a license plate one of my tíos has on his truck, as well as a reference to the famous landmark in Key West, FL. To me, the phrase “90 Miles to Cuba,” while simple, holds an underlying sense of longing and nostalgia, which are common sentiments immigrants from the island hold.
