The Friends of Photography (FOP) of the Greenville Museum
of Art (GMA) is a group of museum members dedicated to
the support and advocacy of photographic art in Eastern
North Carolina. FOP has been in existence for three years
and represents a special membership level within GMA’s
membership program. Its third annual exhibition, FOP in
Black and White, juried by Chris Ogden, honors the significance of the black and
white/monochromatic image in human history. Since the
early years of the Industrial Age, the world’s collective
psyche and understanding of life has been shaped and
formed by the black and white photographic image.
To this day, it continues to be a major influence within
the photographic community, both in appreciation
and collectability. Whether created digitally or in the
traditional darkroom, the black and white image continues
to captivate. With its limited palette, this photographic
genre speaks eloquently of form and defines an object’s
substance in a distinct and captivating way.
